Uttar Pradesh just celebrated Khichdi in the last month. It took a time out spending with my nursing friends to understand what it means.A poor lady from the church crept up to me in the outpatient and pushed a packet of muri laddoos with jaggery.I could not refuse so I accepted it gracefully and later passed it on to Shenaz who has children who would enjoy it.
Khichdi is a time of the year when maternal side of the family visit their daughters in their homes with a potpourri of the year’s harvest. So it would consist of an array of stuff hence named Khichdi.I was fascinated by the concept when it struck me that it had its downside.I believe when the pout pouri from home does not match up it is also a cause of anxiety for the brides in their husbands home.
All the rituals seem to be heavily biased against a girl child and hence the sort of response we get when we deliver them.
I find it all poignant in its connotations but people are actually living such lives. For thr rich the ritual would ensure some kind of connectivity for a woman with her folks but for the poor it would mean an added burden but I wonder if it does have its good side despite the imminent expense.
